Smalandet Moose Park

It has always been my ambition to see a Moose in real life. Maybe they are such a magnificent  unusual docile animal.
A 1.5 hr drive through pleasant countryside takes us from Varberg to Smalandet.
It was amazing to touch the rubbery snout of this massive docile beast as he ambled up to the coach to take part of his pre arranged lunch

A female Moose  or Elk as they are commonly called in Europe

A Mother and Calf

The tourist train similar to the one we rode in.

He is not shy, when it comes to tasty treats specially delivered by the nice tourists.
Moose are characterised by the square rubbery nose Big Ears a dewlap below the chin and a small bob of  a tail Also front legs are longer than hind legs to make a fast getaway over rocks etc in the forest.
Sweden has about 5000 moose and Canada has about 6000 Moose .
the moose are a problem in Sweden as there are about 6000 road accidents per year as a result of moose on the roads, On our drive to Gothenberg we noticed hundreds  of kilometers of fencing to keep them in the forest. This year the cull will be on all animals with 2 or more points on their horns. Previously was 4 pointers (about 4 years old)

Thats me and the big Bull..Im the one on the left🙂
the velvet is a layer of flesh to provide the blood supply for the horn development.
The velvet is soft as velvet right now but as the Testosterone levels fall so the velvet gets itchy and is scratched off. the hair on his snout is soft but the hair on his shoulders is very coarse and apparently hollow.
The name Moose is from the North American Indian word for  Bark .. it strips the bark with its horns.
The Antlers Fall off in the winter.
We were also told that Moose are excellent swimmers , 1 km across a lake is no problem, and they can dive to 4 m depth, they can hold their breath for up to 3 minutes. Their favorite food in the wild is water lilly roots. They dont gorge themselves  their first stomach of 4 is small so they have to eat 3 or 4 hourly. They graze on hundreds of different types of vegetation sometimes including bark .
